What to Watch in September

The summer months have seen an astonishing turn around at local cinemas, with June, July and August seeing Box Office numbers skyrocket from the depths that put the industry in dire straits earlier in the year. While there have been some major bombs of late, such as the recent remake of “The Crow” and the movie adaptation of the video game series “Borderlands”, on the whole the August releases faired pretty well at the box office. Whilst “Deadpool & Wolverine” continued to dominate, becoming the second highest grossing film of the year so far, other major releases “Alien: Romulus”, “It Ends With Us” and “Trap” also made relatively sizeable splashes at the box office.

As we enter a new season , the amount of blockbusters coming our way is on the decline but as we start to shape up for award season later in the year, we will start to get a nice mix of award-contending features and belatedly released summer Hollywood productions.

The biggest new release of the month is undoubtedly “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, which will see Michael Keaton‘s “ghost with the most” return to the big screen after a 36 year absence. Other suitable releases as we start our countdown to spooky season include: Coralie Fargeat‘s body horror “The Substance”, which blew audiences away at Cannes in May; American remake of cult Danish horror “Speak No Evil”; Halle Berry creature-feature “Never Let Go”; and the latest adaptation of “Hellboy” comic book series, “Hellboy: The Crooked Man”.

Festival hopefuls “The Outrun”, “Megalopolis” and “His Three Daughters” also get cinematic releases in September, the latter of which also comes to Netflix on the 20th after a limited theatrical run. Other releases next month include: “Rebel Ridge” (Netflix), “The Critic” and “Wolfs”.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (12A)

Synopsis: Three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River after an unexpected family tragedy. Still haunted by Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), Lydia’s (Winona Ryder) life soon gets turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter discovers a mysterious portal to the afterlife. When someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times, the mischievous demon gleefully returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Rebel Ridge (15)

Synopsis: A former Marine confronts corruption in a small town when local law enforcement unjustly seizes the bag of cash he needs to post his cousin’s bail.

Speak No Evil (15)

The Critic (15)

Synopsis: In a futuristic dystopia with enforced beauty standards, a teen awaiting mandatory cosmetic surgery embarks on a journey to find her missing friend.

The Substance (18)

Cast: Demi Moor, Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid

Synopsis: Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), renowned for an aerobics show, faces a devastating blow on her 50th birthday as her boss fires her. Amid her distress, a laboratory offers her a substance which promises to transform her into an enhanced version of herself.

Wolfs (TBC)

Synopsis: Hired to cover up a high-profile crime, a fixer soon finds his night spiralling out of control when he’s forced to work with an unexpected counterpart.

His Three Daughters (15)

Killer Heat (TBC)

Synopsis: On a remote Greek island, twin brothers (Richard Madden) are caught in a violent love triangle. A damaged detective known as “The Jealousy Man” (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is brought in to investigate the case.

Megalopolis (15)

Synopsis: A conflict between Cesar (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man (TBC)

Synopsis: Hellboy (Jack Kesy) and a rookie BPRD agent find themselves stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. They soon discover a community of witches led by a local devil who has a connection to Hellboy’s past.

Never Let Go (15)

Cast: Halle Berry, Percy Daggs IV, Anthony B. Jenkins, Matthew Kevin Anderson, Christin Park, Stephanie Lavigne

Synopsis: When an unspeakable evil takes over the world, the only protection for a mother (Hall Berry) and her twin sons is their house and strong bond. Needing to stay connected at all times — even tethering themselves with ropes — they must cling to one another and never let go. However, when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival.

The Outrun (15)

My Old Ass (15)

Cast: Maisy Stella, Percy Hynes White, Maddy Ziegler, Kerrice Brooks, Aubrey Plaza

Synopsis: An 18th-birthday mushroom trip brings Elliott (Maisy Stella) face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza). When the older Elliott starts handing out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn’t do, she realizes she has to rethink everything about family, love, and what’s becoming a transformative summer.
